Topic: Putting More Local in Local News
Speaker: Linda Shapley
Brewery: 6 and 40
Linda Shapley is on a mission.
After more than three decades at local news outlets throughout the state, she found herself out of a job in May. She is using that setback to refocus on a new journey to find different ways to preserve Local News.
That has led her to a partnership with the League of Women Voters Colorado to manage the Eyewitness Corps, which has observers attend government meetings to provide information to share with understaffed news organizations. She’s also teaching a newswriting class at Colorado State University and partnering with teachers at Northglenn High School to create a program invested in news literacy.
In her talk, “Putting More Local in Local News,” Linda will share her insights on the challenges facing the industry, strategies for their survival, and the broader implications for community strength and resilience. She hopes to offer a compelling roadmap for sustaining the invaluable service that Local News provides.
