Tonight, the group will discuss Transportation Demand Management (TDM).
Developers who submit TDM plans may be allowed to build with fewer parking spaces. Clayworks has been approved to do this. A TDM plan might include offering bike racks, free bus tickets, information about public transit, etc. The last time this topic came before City Council, the meeting memo suggested that the City could stop providing free parking to employees of downtown businesses. The downtown merchants innundated Council with emails objecting to this idea. Tonight's memo doesn't include that suggestion, but it does mention reducing the 2 hour free parking and/or increasing parking fees.
The meeting packets includes survey results from people who were asked how they get to downtown Golden. Some said they usually walk or bike. Those who didn't walk, bike, or take public transportation were asked why not. They responded that public transit was too slow, not close to my house, doesn't feel safe, the service stops too early. Would-be bikers said there were not enough bike racks, bike lanes don't feel safe, sidewalks don't feel safe, I'm transporting children, I'm transporting groceries, I'm too old, I'm disabled, this town is too hilly, etc. The responses were interesting and appear on pp. 9-47 of the meeting packet.
