The Board will adjourn to a Study Session after Public Comment. Their topics tonight include:
- safety improvements for Highway 93
- adding a "protected bike lane" to Ford and Jackson through the Central Neighborhoods
- staff reports regarding Hwy 93, Colfax, and pedestrian improvements on Arapahoe St.
The second topic (adding the protected bike lane) has caused a lot of consternation for the people who live along that street—particularly those on the west side. The plan calls for installing a concrete curb, to separate the bike lane from the car lanes. To make room for the new curb, they plan to move both traffic lanes to the west, abutting directly against the curb. The residents, some of whom have small children, are concerned about the loss of the buffering lane. Many drivers speed through that section, and the residents don't want the traffic brought even closer to their yards.
The residents have submitted public comment both in writing and at public meetings. Here's an excerpt of a letter from homeowner Melissa Thumm:
As the mother of two small children who will no longer be safe in their own front yard, and the other children and elderly people who will face similar risks (though not as frequently as my children), I struggle to understand how the City can ignore our concerns and eliminate the buffer that is the difference between a “scare” and a serious injury or fatality.... Spending $3M of taxpayer money to build a known safety hazard… I simply don’t get it.
