Delve into a fascinating evening of captivating stories and imagery as historian Lauren Giebler presents Rails & Cocktails: The American Hobo.
While hobos are often associated with the Great Depression, Giebler will explore how the hobo experience spans more than 150 years of railroad history. From the 1870s to today, a wide range of individuals have ridden the rails for uninvited and un-ticketed, including immigrants seeking opportunity, socialists fueling labor movements, war veterans in search of peace, thrill-seekers chasing adventure, and out-of-work railroaders looking for their next job. Through vivid imagery and compelling research, Giebler will shed light on the motivations, culture, and enduring spirit of those who chose a life on the rails.
Join us for an evening of insight and discovery as we explore the rich history of the American hobo and uncover what continues to be an alluring part of the American experience.
