America was electrified into spontaneous united action by the unprovoked attack United States' territory by Japan at 7:55 a. m. Sunday. The bombing of Pearl Harbor. Hawaii, was distinctly heard over a shortwave set by John and Charles Bullard of Golden.... In a brief 500-word message to Congress Monday President Roosevelt announced a state of war with Japan exists, which was confirmed practically unanimously by both houses of congress immediately after, their being only one dissenting vote by a woman member in the House of Representatives.

Governor Ralph Carr sent a telegram Golden's Civil Defense Coordinator advising him to organize the police and fire departments to fend off sabotage of strategic targets. They were to protect industries, utilities, dams, bridges and other facilities.

The rest of the paper, which had been planned before the Sunday morning attack, was full of Christmas ads.
