1901 Map of Colorado, with Golden circled - Click to enlarge

I recently bought a 1901 map of Colorado. Naturally, I was most interested in the Golden section. Do you recognize the line heading west, into the mountains, with the circles at intervals? That’s the Colorado & Southern Railroad, and the circles are stops along the line. At that time, it went to Central City and Black Hawk to the northwest and Idaho Springs and Georgetown to the southwest.

There were few roads in Colorado in 1901, and–particularly in the mountains–railroads were essential for transporting goods. The railroad timetable appeared every week on the front page of the Colorado Transcript.
