Golden History: Adding Fire Stations as Needed

Golden's population according to the U.S. Census, 1860-1980

After World War II, Golden's population and business grew significantly. Much of the growth took place south of the original city. By the 1970s, citizens felt that we needed a second fire station in closer proximity to the newer developments.

Photo from the July 20, 1970 Golden Transcript, showing the construction beginning on Station Number 2

The April 10, 1970 Golden Transcript announced that City Council had taken the first step to approving a new fire station on Ulysses Street (map). The estimated cost was $14,000 for the metal building, with an additional $2500 for equipment. A new fire engine had already been purchased.

By the early 1980s, new housing was under construction in the Heritage Dells area (with much more planned), so in 1983, another, larger fire station was built on Heritage Road (map). The building on Ulysses Street is still used for storing firefighting equipment.
