Golden History: Celebrating in a Plague Year

The City put together a cute video about the candle program–watch it!

Here’s a piece of short-term history. In December of 2020, Coronavirus was raging and the vaccine had not yet been released. The Health Department was still posting health stats every day. The County was up to 22,213 cases of COVID and Golden had had 770.

The City made the difficult decision to cancel the Candlelight Walk and the Holiday parades. Instead, they broadcast the lighting ceremony, starring Mayor Weinberg and her daughter, the City’s former Communications Director, Karlyn Tilley, and Chamber Executive Director Nola Krajewski. (The video has apparently been removed from the City's Facebook page and YouTube account, but it was nice.

As a substitute for the usual holiday social events, the City encouraged everyone to light a candle every night at 7PM through the month of December. They made a video about that, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK9lhjCHl_0.

In 2021, with 77.8% of the population at least partially vaccinated, we resumed the traditional lighting ceremony.

If you enjoy the crowd, come downtown tonight and enjoy the 2025 Candlelight Walk. If you prefer enjoying the lights without the crowd, you’ll still have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the lights. They’ll be on every night all month!
