Goldens-Readiness

Illustration by Pete Torpey (with a little help from AI)
The City is hosting Goldens in Golden tomorrow. This event attracts thousands of people and dogs and gives a real boost to downtown businesses during the slowest time of the year, BUT it will cause huge traffic and parking problems.
If you're planning to come downtown for some other event (such as the class at Foothills Art Center or the children's play at Miners Alley), be prepared to spend extra time getting there, and the possibility of finding no parking spot. The City is providing free shuttles (with dogs) from The Splash (map) from 8AM to 3PM. Those will drop you at Parfet Park. If you're taking an Uber, the drop-off spot is at the Clear Creek lot (across from the new City Hall - map).
If you're close enough to walk, that's probably the best way to get into the downtown area.

Golden History: A Quick Look at 1949

This photo was taken in 1949. The arch was new that year, and still had the original tagline, "Where the West remains."
Meyer Hardware appears on the far right. The building that now houses Baby Doe’s Clothing was under construction. It was too be an addition to The Fair Variety store. The south corner of that block (now The Old Capitol Grill) was a grocery store.
The west side of the 1200 block had three drugstores! Jack’s Pharmacy was on the north corner (now Goozell Yogurt). Alpine Drug was in the middle of the block (now Del’s Tonsorial). Foss Drug was on the south end of the block (now Peak Cycle).
The Table Mountain Inn was The Holland House at that time (and much smaller).
