Aftermath of the Windstorm and Power Outage: Slash, Feedback, Grants

Slash

This week's email newsletter from the City mentioned free public drop-off days for fallen branches and downed trees:

The Tincup Ridge Slash Yard (151 S Rooney Rd, Golden, CO 80401) will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, and Saturday, January 24.

These temporary drop-offs are intended for storm-related debris only, specifically fallen or downed branches. Christmas trees will not be accepted.

Feedback

The State is inviting feedback regarding Xcel's handling of the Planned Shutdown:

Public Safety Power Shutoff - December 2025
On December 17, 2025 Xcel Energy implemented a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) impacting around 52,000 customers in Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties. PSPS events are implemented in order to reduce the risk of a wildfire caused by power lines

The Golden Chamber wants to hear how the Planned Shutdown affected local businesses:

Grants for Downtown Businesses

During the January 5th Downtown Development Authority meeting, the board decided to offer grants to help alleviate losses suffered by downtown businesses during the Power Shutdown. The grants will be $2500, $3000, or $3500, depending on the size/revenue of the business. Businesses located in the DDA area will be contacted by the City.

Sweet Dreams for Golden Kids

The Kiwanis Club of Golden has a wonderful new service project.

Last year, the Kiwanis Club of Golden identified a growing and often overlooked need within our community. While many local organizations have admirably expanded their efforts to address food insecurity, our research revealed another critical gap affecting children in Golden: the lack of adequate personal bedding to keep them warm, comfortable, and secure during Colorado’s cold winter months.

To meet this need, we partnered with Sweet Dream in a Bag, a Colorado nonprofit founded by Susie and Wayne Fox. Since 2010, Sweet Dream in a Bag has provided thousands of children living in poverty with vibrant, high‑quality bedding packages designed to bring warmth, dignity, and joy into their daily lives. Together, we launched our newest project—and we are proud to announce the successful completion of our pilot effort, which delivered brand‑new bedding to 51 Golden‑area students, just in time for Christmas!

The Kiwanis Club welcomes volunteers as well as financial contributions to this project. Please continue to their website to learn more about it!

Golden History: Chicken Thievery

Colorado Transcript - January 9, 1930

The January 9, 1930 Colorado Transcript announced a $50 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a gang of chicken thieves.

Many people–both town and country–kept a flock of chickens at this time. They were a source of meat (occasionally), eggs (often), and cash.

Chicken thievery was a fairly common problem. Hobos might steal one or two chickens for immediate consumption, or concerted thieves might steal an entire flock to be sold in a different market. Such losses were a significant financial blow to a family. In 1909, two barns in adjacent yards in Golden were burned to the ground to provide a diversion for thieves, who got away with 68 chickens.

The law took chicken theft seriously, and when the thieves were caught, they often served time in either the county jail or the state penitentiary.

  • When the bevy of chicken thieves was arrested last spring…two of them were sentenced to a term in the penitentiary.

  • Chicken thieves are again getting in their work in Golden, Mrs. Searles’ coop having been robbed of a number of fine spring “frys” Monday night.
    Colorado Transcript
    , July 15, 1909
  • Chicken thieves are getting in their work in Golden, especially along Ford street, where a number of choice broods of young chickens have been taken

    , July 9, 1910
  • Chicken thieves are again operating in Jefferson county, A. Hopper on the Middle Golden road being the latest victim. Monday night nearly a hundred of his flock of blooded Plymouth Rocks were stolen, entailing a loss of about $200.

    , July 14, 1923
  • With the arrest of Henry Crutts and Frank McCouch, it is believed that an organized gang of chicken thieves which has been operating in Jefferson and other counties has been broken up….They admitted their guilt in this case and also stated that they had stolen at least two thousand dollars worth of poultry in Jefferson County in recent months.

  • 90 Days for Chicken Thieves
Glenn A. Burd and Francis A. Brown were given 90 days in the county jail by District Judge S. A. Johnson for stealing chickens worth $21.
    Colorado Transcript
    , September 12, 1929

In 1922, a local farmer saw a man stealing his chickens. He warned him, then shot and killed him. The farmer was tried for murder, but the jury acquitted him after ten minutes of deliberation. They had no sympathy for chicken thieves.
