Tomorrow at Noon: Horses & History

If you've ever wanted to hear Golden's story from beginning to end (or more accurately from Native Americans to the 21st Century downtown renaissance), here's a perfect opportunity:

My daughter Margaret and I will be doing a Wagon Ride Through History tomorrow at noon. Margaret—with her Clydesdales, Wallace and Todd—will drive us through Golden's oldest commercial and residential neighborhoods while I tell the tales of Golden's past.

I hope to see you tomorrow! Tickets are available at ClearCreekCarriages.com.

    Tomorrow Morning: Geology Field Trip

Tomorrow morning at 9, plan to join Mines Professor Donna Anderson and the Stewards of Golden Open Space for a Geology Field Trip.

Golden was a center of clay mining in northeastern Colorado for nearly 140 years. Clay came from two geologic formations: the Dakota Group and the Laramie Formation. The clays in the two formations had different mineral compositions, used for making different products. Fifteen clay mines existed in and around Golden, only one of which is now active.

The historic Cambria Lime Kiln along Kinney Run Gulch is the only restored lime-kiln in Jefferson County. It was built in 1879 by John Hodges as the first structure of his Cambria Brick and Tile Company. The Cambria Kiln was built with Lyons Formation sandstone from the cliff behind the kiln, on the east side of Kinney Run Trail. It was conveniently located near the “lime seams” also east of the Kinney Run Trail. It operated until 1892.

In 2005, a City Council Resolution recognized “the unique geologic areas in the Eagle Ridge area, including the Dakota hog back, Cambria Lime Kiln, Kinney Run Trail, and riparian areas,” and designated them “as a geologic and environmental education park.”

Want to know more? Join Mines Professor, Donna Anderson, for a walk back through time to learn about the geology and mining history of Golden. We will meet at 9:00 am at the Shelton Elementary School parking lot.

Golden History: A Mobile Book Store

Golden Tourist Camp on Jackson Street, between 22nd and 23rd Streets

The June 14, 1928 Colorado Transcript reports that “The Vagabond Book Shop” was visiting at the Golden Camp Grounds. This was a custom vehicle that served as both camper and bookstore. The living quarters included running water, a gas plate, and a sink. The bookstore carried 1000 volumes, including “some of the finest literature that the world has produced.”

The owners of the shop were based in Carmel, California but apparently traveled to tourist towns. A Golden resident had been visiting Santa Fe when she met the itinerant booksellers. They were planning to go from Santa Fe to Estes Park, but she persuaded them to make a stop in Golden along the way.

The mobile bookstore was an interesting novelty, but Golden was not bereft of a book source: there had been a bookstore in downtown Golden continuously since the 1870s. The proprietor at that time was Fred Robinson, who owned the bookstore from 1912-1947.

The Golden Transcript (originally called the Colorado Transcript) has been publishing since 1866. The Golden History Museum has been working on digitizing the historic issues. You’ll find old Transcripts online at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
