Golden History: Invest Local

Colorado Transcript - November 21, 1929

The November 21, 1929 Colorado Transcript included this advertisement for Transcript Christmas cards. The 1929 stock market crash had happened the previous month, and the Transcript used that event to continue their on-going campaign telling people to invest (and shop) locally.

In another sign of the times, the telephone company reminded people of the marvels and convenience of having a telephone. They were installing new ones at the rate of 70 per day in their service region (a little less impressive when you consider that their region included Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, El Paso Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihauhua in Mexico). Most households were not yet convinced of the need to have a telephone in the house.

Another technological marvel had come to town: the Golden Gem Theater was showing talkies! You can watch the 100 PER CENT TALKING PICTURE that they showed 96 years ago today: Big News.
