Mystery on the Mountain

M.L. Richardson called last night to ask if I knew what was happening on Lookout Mountain. She said the road was completely filled with cars with their headlines and taillights on. I went and looked, and we stood a few blocks apart, talking on the phone and speculating on what we were seeing.

I had never seen so much traffic on that road. I thought it might be a procession of first responders, in memory of 9/11. As it happened, I was dead wrong.

I sent an email to Chris Davell to ask if he knew what was happening. He speculated that there were semis in the line of traffic, and that they were driving very slowly to keep from dropping over the edge. That road really isn't wide enough for big trucks.

While Chris and I were exchanging observations, M.L. sent an article explaining that I-70 was closed, so we were probably seeing traffic diverted from the interstate over to the Lariat Loop Trail. (That must have been an adventure for some of those commuters!)

Golden History: Celebrating a Century of the Golden Chamber

September 12, 2020 - Chamber President Nola Krajewski leads a toast: Cheers to 100 Years!

On September 12, 2020, we were in the midst of the COVID pandemic. Everyone was wearing masks in public and those who could were working at home.

The Golden Chamber of Commerce had been looking forward to celebrating the 100th anniversary of their formation in 1920. The standard approach would have been a big gala dinner. Under the circumstances, that kind of gathering was out of the question.

Teams on the Hunt - enlarge

They came up with a brilliant answer: a trivia race/scavenger hunt. Participants formed small teams and raced around downtown Golden, looking for things hinted at in a set of clues. When they found them, they took a picture and posted it online. The first team to complete the hunt won.

It was a great solution for the constraints of the pandemic--it was outdoors, people could wear masks, and there was no need to huddle in crowds.

All of this means that the Golden Chamber is now celebrating its 105th anniversary. (Happy Birthday!)

Colorado’s Historic Railroads: A Journey Through Mountain Rails Past and Present

By Rich Grant
Go World Travel Magazine

It was never easy to build a railroad in Colorado.

As the highest territory in the continental United States, Colorado was filled with an estimated 4,391 mountain peaks, deep river gorges, severe winter snowfalls, droughts, floods, and steep elevation gains, all making the art of building railroads here a difficult – and treacherous – occupation...
