What's in bloom along Golden’s Trails? American plum!

Figure 1. Top left: flowers of American plum — Prunus americana Marshall. Top right: a shrub of American plum on North Table Mountain. Bottom: Locations of thickets of American plum on the slope of North Table Mountain.

By Tom Schweich

One of the early-blooming shrubs along Golden’s trails is American plum — Prunus americana Marshall.  This very common shrub is found almost everywhere in Golden, except … Alas! … on Schweich Hill.  It is one of several shrubs in Golden that bloom before the leaves emerge and is therefore called a precocious shrub.  It is also very fragrant, and you can sometimes smell them before you see them.

There are some in bloom now along the fence at the south end of New Loveland Mine Park.  They will bloom soon on the slope of North Table Mountain, in large thickets shown above. The thickets will appear to turn white when the shrubs are in full bloom. You can walk through the thickets on the City of Golden’s North Table Mountain Trail, accessed by way of the Peery Parkway Trailhead.

American plum is very widely distributed across the United States from Massachusetts and Vermont to Washington and Oregon.  In Colorado, it is common along the Front Range, particularly from metropolitan Denver north to Fort Collins.

American plum was described by Humphry Marshall in his 1785 book, Arbustrum Americanum or The American Grove, a book about American trees. Interesting to me is that Marshall dedicated his book to Benjamin Franklin, then the President of the American Philosophical Society. At the time, the late 18th century, all sciences were considered branches of natural philosophy.

Marshall was born in the village of Marshallton, southeast Pennsylvania, in 1722.  He became a stonemason and the stone house he built is still in use.  In addition to building a small observatory in one corner of this residence, Marshall also created a botanical garden, probably only the second botanical garden in the United States.

12-1PM This is the Way: Tracing the path between Damascus Steel and Beskar in the Star Wars Universe @ CSM

Presented by Dr. Suveen Mathaudhu

All interested members of the Mines community and beyond are welcome to attend.

In the Star Wars universe there is no metal or alloy that compares to Beskar, the legendary “iron” of the Mandalorian tribes. Are you curious how pure Beskar can be extremely strong, corrosion resistant and able to survive blaster bolts and lightsaber strikes alike? Would you like to know how the clandestine skills of Armorer metalsmiths might contribute to the shaping and forming of an “indestructible” material. We will step into a galaxy far away to learn about the history of Beskar metalworking and contemplate some real-world metal-processing discoveries that may explain the seemingly magical behaviors of Beskar and its alloys. We will also discuss how some of these emerging technologies can be harnessed for the creation of new, real materials for extreme environments.

The lecture is free and open to the general public.

 Today’s theme: The Erie Canal

The Erie Canal was an engineering marvel that altered the course of the early history of the United States. The Canal, once thought to be an impossible task, changed the economic profile of the country and provided a major catalyst for industrialization and growth. The Canal’s story is a tapestry of backroom political dealings, surging boomtowns, and surveyors who had never worked on a canal project. Join Active Minds as we discuss one of the most influential and impressive feats of civil engineering in American history.

Save your spot for this Zoom program.

Log-in instructions will be emailed out approximately 30 minutes before the start of the program.

Rendering of "The Junction," to be built at the north end of Golden. - enlarge

The board will also hear from developers working on "The Junction." This is a light industry/commercial area planned just north of Golden's city limits. Once the project has received all approvals, the plan is to annex this property into the City of Golden.

The former Golden Motel, now called the Copper Gold Apartments, at 24th and Ford.

Staff will report on a new resident at the Copper Gold apartments. This is one of three Jefferson County Housing Authority projects in the Central Neighborhoods. GURA is particularly interested in this project because they helped fund the Housing Authority's purchase of the buildings. The Housing Authority's plan is to replace the old Golden Motel buildings with a larger complex.

The City plans to remove several mature trees on the west side of the former motel to build a sidewalk. The previous owner objected to this plan, but the Housing Authority is in favor.

They will hear a status report on the Lena Gulch project at Heritage Road and Highway 40.

The group will review the process they would need to go through to establish additional Urban Renewal Areas within Golden.

Golden History: The Boston Company

The Boston Company, located at 10th and Washington, now part of Parfet Park. Notice the pale outline of Castle Rock on the right.

This photo shows some of Golden’s earliest settlers. The men of the Boston Company arrived in Golden in June of 1859. They came with wagonloads of goods to sell and built one of our first store buildings on the north side of the Creek, in what is now Parfet Park. Look around the park the next time you’re there and see if you can spot the marker that commemorates the site of this building.

The photo shows the Boston Company building later in its life, when it served as a private residence. It was demolished in 1927 to make way for the park..
