2-3PM Virtual/Call In: Active Minds Mondays - Chocolate

Jefferson County Public Library believes we can always be connecting and learning. Keep your mind active every Monday! Check out our website for other weekly Call In/Livestream events.
Today’s theme: Chocolate
The story of chocolate is a "rich" tale indeed. It involves aristocracy and slavery, innovation and coincidence. Pivotal roles were played by both Christopher Columbus and Hernando Cortéz. Join Active Minds as we describe how extremely bitter cacao beans are transformed into one of the world's most sought-after flavors and tell chocolate stories such as the rise of the luxury chocolate industry in Switzerland and the origins of the Hershey company.

Who Do you Know Who's Good?

The Rotary Club of Golden is conducting the 20th annual Ethics in Business Awards program in 2025. Each year we seek nominations from the public of those organizations in our community, both for-profit and not-for-profit, that demonstrate the highest standards of ethical business practice, integrity, and civic and social responsibility. All nominations received by Feb. 28, 2025 will be evaluated by students in the Ethics class at the Colorado School of Mines. They will choose the winners, who, along with all nominees, will be recognized and honored at an Awards luncheon on May 16, 2025 at the Denver Marriott West hotel. To make a nomination, go to https://ethics.goldenrotary.org/nomination-form/ This Ethics in Business Awards website also gives more details on the Ethics awards program, which has been an important and popular event since its founding in 2006.
Please pass this message along to friends and associates who may want to nominate their most-ethical business.
Golden History: Successful Fund-Raiser

This photo from the 1870s shows the Golden House, Calvary Church, and the South School, all on 14th Street. The Golden House later burned, and was replaced by the Armory in 1913. South School was demolished in the 1960s. Golden History Museum collection.

The cornerstone of Calvary Church was laid in October of 1867. By September of 1868, the building had been "so far completed as to render it fit for occupation." There were many details still underway, and the congregation was busily raising money for finishing work and furnishings.

The January 6, 1869 Colorado Transcript describes a fund-raising festival organized by the ladies of the church. It was held in the newly-completed "Harrison's Hall," which was the second story of 1204-1210 Washington Avenue.
Harrison's Hall was very tastefully decorated, and the tables well filled with refreshments and articles of usefulness. Every auxiliary that the fertile ingenuity of woman could devise to make a dollar, was found there in the shape of raffles, post-office, soothsayer, fish-pond, &c., &c. ...The hall was crowded from early in the evening till near midnight, everybody enjoying themselves to the fullest extent, leaving behind them as a testimonial of the pleasure the snug little sum of $151,60 net profit.
