A tree named for two people: Douglas-fir – Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.

By Tom Schweich
Recently I wrote about Creeping barberry – Berberis repens Pursh – as a local native plant that retains its leaves through the winter season. In that article I also mentioned two Englishmen, David Douglas and Archibald Menzies, who traveled extensively in the Pacific Northwest and became associated with a local native cone-bearing tree: the Douglas-fir – Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.
Like many of Colorado’s native cone-bearing trees, Douglas-fir retains most of its leaves through the winter while shedding a few old leaves year-round. Douglas-fir is not natively found within the Golden city limits because our climate is too hot and dry. However, along the Peaks to Plains Trail, e.g., at the suspension bridge crossing to Welch Ditch, the north-facing slopes of the canyon provide habitat and a place to see this majestic tree.
Douglas-fir trees are easy to recognize in the field. Besides being a majestic tree, the cones hang downward and have a unique three-pointed bract (see the photo below). Also, the leaves (needles) are arranged around the stem in a spiral and have blunt tips.

The full Arts & Cultures Commission meets at 5PM. They will discuss goals and strategies from a recent workshop; their communications and messaging plans, and "Golden Museum-related Goals" (not sure whether that's just the History Museum or the other museums in town). They will discuss their strategies and prioritize their strategies.
The packet includes update on the various public art projects recently installed (downtown bike racks), soon to be installed (Ulysses Park, Triangle Park), and envisioned for the future (new City Hall). Conservators are working on the Return of the Cutthroat sculpture and will be assessing the WWI Liberty Bell that will be moving to the new City Hall.
The Arts & Culture grants are being reviewed and discussed offline. The subcommittee will bring their recommendations to the Commission in December.

Golden History: Officer Down

Golden Theater – Golden History Museum Collection

The November 3, 1949 Colorado Transcript reported that Patrolman Everett Hall had been shot in front of the Golden Theater. He was trying to break up a fight between his two brothers and three Mines students.
According to the sheriff the argument and blows between the men ensued when, in making a sharp turn into the theater, one of the students collided with Obie Hall. Officer Hall, who was on duty at the time, waded into the fracas to break it up.
Colorado Transcript – November 3, 1949
During the struggle, Hall’s gun fell out of his holster, hit the sidewalk, and went off. The bullet hit him about 4 inches above his ankle and was ranging upward.
Officer Hall was rushed off for surgery. The five men involved in the fight were taken into custody. At a hearing held a week later, the Hall brothers were found guilty of disturbing the peace and the students were released. Each of the Halls were fined $10.
Officer Hall returned to work several weeks later. In 1967, he became Golden’s Police Chief. He retired in 1973, after serving the City for 28 years.
