1PM JSO Winter Concert: Shall We Dance? @ Colorado School of Mines

Jefferson Symphony Valentine Concert: Shall We Dance? Saturday, February 14, 2026 1:00 p.m. at the Green Center
JSO Principal Flute Elizabeth Hicks-Kimmey performs the world premiere of Synchrony for Silver by local composer Cherise Leiter.
Dance is a shared human instinct, expressed across cultures and centuries. Today’s program celebrates that instinct in many forms through the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra.
From the earthy snap and sway of Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Slavonic Dance No. 1 to the elegance of the Blue Danube Waltz, these works translate social movement into sound—music written to evoke spinning couples, stamping feet, and the momentum of bodies in motion. Even when the dance is imagined rather than literal, the rhythmic drive is undeniable, carrying the audience along with it.
Ballet excerpts like the Adagio from Swan Lake emphasize poise and lyricism, while American and Latin-influenced works—Variations on a Shaker Melody, Danzon No. 2, Malambo from Estancia, and Mambo from West Side Story—lean into groove, pulse, and communal energy. The tango-inflected Libertango shows how dance has inspired composers in the modern era, blending tradition with contemporary color.
Taken together, these pieces form a global tour of music that invites you not just to listen, but to embrace the urge to move.

Golden History: Jefferson Symphony

Old Methodist church at 14th and Washington – Denver Public Library Western History Collection – site of the first performance

The Jefferson Symphony is another example of Golden’s amazing volunteer base. The group formed in 1953 as the Golden Chamber Ensemble. Their first concert took place in the old Methodist church building, at 14th and Washington.

They quickly found that other musicians wanted to join, and before long they were big enough to change their name from “Golden Ensemble” to “Golden Symphony Orchestra.” Many of the musicians came from outside of Golden, so in 1972 they became the “Jefferson Symphony Orchestra.”

The Symphony performed in the auditorium at the Central School (later Mitchell Elementary) until the “new” Golden High School was built in the mid-1950s. They used the high school’s auditorium until the Green Center was built on the School of Mines Campus in 1972. The 1400-seat Bunker Auditorium in the Green Center has been their home for the past 54 years.

For many years, they gave a free summer concert in Parfet Park. Finally, the cost of renting the stage and risers became too much for the organization. They played their last Parfet Concert in 2019.
The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra is celebrating their 73rd season–an amazing accomplishment for an all-volunteer organization!

At that time, limited information was released to help the public remain alert while officers conducted additional investigative work. To protect the privacy and safety of the victims, preserve the integrity of the investigation, and prevent potential suspects from fleeing or altering behavior, investigators did not release further details until composite sketches could be completed and key investigative steps were underway...
