Golden History: Peace, Prosperity, and Lots of Building

January 4, 1951 Colorado Transcript Headlines

The January 4, 1951 Colorado Transcript was brimming with post-war optimism and a determination to do away with the old world and build the new.

Top Row: Original Golden High School, Pleasant View Elementary, Coolbaugh Hall Middle: 1954 Jeffco Courthouse, Hwy 6 through Clear Creek Canyon, Coors Brewery expansion Bottom: 1950s Safeway at 13th and Ford, Masonic Hall on 10th, Baptist Church at 13th and Jackson - click to enlarge

Jefferson County’s schools had all been consolidated into a single School District, under the leadership of Golden’s own Roger Q. Mitchell. Golden’s over-crowded schools were going to be relieved with construction of an addition to the high school building and a new elementary school in Pleasant View.

Construction of Coolbaugh Hall of Chemistry was underway, and new “permanent-temporary” student accommodations were in place in Prospector Park.

Golden’s Pioneer Park had been acquired by the County. The trees had been removed and the site leveled in preparation for building a new courthouse. The new building would have fireproof records storage and space for parking.

An automobile highway was under construction through Clear Creek Canyon.

Both Coors Brewery and Coors Porcelain continued their post-war expansions.

Safeway was constructing a new and larger store (with its own parking lot) on Ford Street.

The Masonic Hall on 10th Street was nearing completion.

Attendance in Golden’s churches was high. The Transcript attributed this to concern over “the dangers of an all-out war.”
