Blacksmith in the Golden History Park - Photo by Lindsay Young
Have you always wanted to learn about blacksmithing but you’ve had trouble finding a good option? Join our volunteer every third Saturday at Golden History Park for a fun morning of observation and learning about blacksmithing. Our recreated blacksmith shop, complete with historic tools and coal-fired forge, will transport you to the 1800s. Bring your technical questions and your camera and we’ll take care of the rest.

1-3:30PM Paper Flower Sculpture: Therapeutic Art Workshop @ Foothills Art Center - Creative Campus

Take a pause from the busy world and let your creativity bloom. This workshop begins with gentle breathwork and a calming meditation to ease stress and bring you fully into the moment. Once grounded, you’ll be guided step by step in crafting your own paper wildflower—a piece of art inspired by the beauty of nature.
You’ll learn how to sculpt individual flowers out of paper, shaping petals and assembling blossoms step by step. Once your flowers are formed, you’ll decorate them with colors and details that reflect your personal style, making each piece truly your own.
By the end, you’ll leave with more than a handmade flower—you’ll carry home a reminder to slow down, nurture your creativity, and stay rooted in the present. More information

Golden History: Early Tourism

Setting forth on a burro ride to Castle Rock - 13th and Washington
Tourism was a new and growing industry in the first quarter of the 20th century. Long-distance railroads were some of the earliest instigators, encouraging people to see the sites in America–particularly the new national parks. From that beginning, tourism filtered down into increasingly local pursuits, including amusement parks such as Elitch Gardens, which were accessed by trolley systems.
One of Golden’s earliest tourist-centric businesses offered burro rides to the top of Castle Rock. The business owner, Charles Quaintance, also operated a photography studio at 13th and Washington. He took photographs of every group as they began their ride to Castle Rock and developed the photos while they were gone. When they returned, he showed them the photos and offered them for sale. (This was a precursor to the sales tactic we still see at places like Disneyworld.)
Those of us who collect old photos of Golden encounter these burro photos fairly frequently, but no two are alike, since every one of them shows a different group of tourists.
