Golden History: A Fracas at the Rock Rest

Golden Daily Transcript – March 8, 1972

The March 8, 1972 Colorado Transcript covered a fight between two motorcycle gangs at the Rock Rest Tavern. One group–The Deadmen–was described as “a local motorcycle club.” Several of the participants belonged to a Colorado Springs-based group called the Piltdown Men. One of the jackets recovered from the scene bore Sons of Silence insignia.

Law enforcement officials were alerted by a phone call that a fight was about to start at the tavern. Twenty-two officers–from Golden and Lakewood Police and the Jeffco Sheriff’s Department–arrived at the scene just as the fight began. As soon as the officers walked through the door, the participants dropped their weapons.

Law enforcement officials confiscated a host of weapons at the scene including ten loaded pistols, four knives and ten heavy motorcycle chains, some fitted with stell buckles for use as belts.

Twenty-six men were arrested, but the charges to be filed were dependent on law enforcement being able to link particular weapons to individual participants. They were initially charged with assault, disturbance, and malicious mischief.

The story continued in the next day’s paper, which reported that seven people had gone to the hospital with minor injuries from the fight. The District Attorney’s office said they were having trouble associating weapons with people, so it was likely that all participants would get off with misdemeanor charges.

Employees at the Rock Rest reported $500 in damages, including 60 broken beer glasses, damage to a pool table and walls, and two missing pool balls. “I know where one of them went,” said one of the employees. “It went into the side of a guy’s head.”

Two weeks later, the national president of the Deadmen–the local club–visited the Transcript to try to offset the bad publicity caused by the fight. He explained that the Deadmen wanted no part of the fight. “Of course if someone starts to hassle them, they vow that they’ll hassle right back.”
