Golden History: A Big Event in Our Small Town

Barack Obama in Lions Park

Thirteen years ago today (September 13, 2012) President Obama visited Golden and gave a speech in Lions Park, near the Community Center. The most memorable part of the speech was his remark, “I don’t see how you guys get anything done here–it’s too pretty!”

The President was introduced by Colorado-based Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. Golden had good reason to be excited: the last sitting president to have visited Golden was Ulysses S. Grant.

The City had just filled in the pond that year, and they had been trying to seed grass in the newly-added soil. The crowd was allowed to stand in that area, but the ground was decidedly squelchy.
