Golden History: Coors Malted Milk

The August 3, 1916 Colorado Transcript announced that Coors was constructing an additional factory to make malted milk. Colorado instituted Prohibition four years before the rest of the country (in 1916), which meant they could no longer produce beer. Instead, they switched to making malted milk, which they sold to candy-makers.
This switch enabled many Golden-area farmers to weather the depression, as Coors provided a ready market for locally sourced milk. Prohibition ended in 1933. Coors produced both beer and malted milk until 1957, at which time they discontinued the malt business.
