Golden History: Cemetery Hill

Golden in September of 1870 – Dan Abbott collection

Will not some one take the matter in hand of constructing a carriage road to the top of Cemetery Hill? It is an improvement much needed. Those who now have dear ones lying there will contribute liberally, as will doubtless others, as sooner or later many will be called upon to lay some of those near and dear to them upon that sacred mount.
Colorado Transcript – September 1, 1869
Golden’s original cemetery was located on a hill north of the city (map). It was probably chosen for its magnificent view, but as the quote above indicates, it was a difficult point to access–particularly for those conveying a coffin to the spot.
In 1873, the City purchased the land where the current cemetery is located. They hired someone to transfer the graves from cemetery hill, but the digger apparently did an incomplete job. Bodies were periodically discovered on the site of the original cemetery, particularly in the 1950s, when houses were constructed on the hill.
Many thanks to the Golden Rotary Club for sponsoring for sponsoring Golden History Moments for the month of September.
