Golden History: Cigarette Advertising (it used to be a thing)

Local ads from the September 28, 1948 Oredigger newspaper
The September 28, 1948 Oredigger shows that Golden’s merchants were generous in supporting the School of Mines student newspaper. Jimmy’s Shoe Shop, McKeehen’s men’s ware, Strawn’s bookstore, Foss Drug, the dry cleaner, the barber shop, the grocery store, the lumber yard, gas stations, the flower shop, the bakery…nearly every business in town bought ads in the paper.

What was really striking, though, was the number of cigarette ads in every issue of the paper…the tobacco companies recognized the lifetime potential of those young men and women!

The project area is along West Colfax Avenue/U.S. Highway 40 between Interstate 70 and the C-470 overpass near Violet Street. Golden officials have said flood mitigation work, like installing larger culverts, is desperately needed to protect the people and property in the floodplain... Read more...
