Birdseye View of Construction in Golden - April, 2025

Drone footage of several construction projects currently in Golden - watch it

My readers always enjoy Pat Klein's aerial images of Golden. With so much construction in town lately, he's been capturing some interesting video footage of Mines apartments (west of Hwy 6), the new undergrad dorm (19th & Illnois), "The Col" (17270 Colfax), Ulysses Park, Lena Gulch, Canyon View Apartments (off Golden Gate Canyon Road), and Clayworks (9th and Ford).

Watch it here!

Compare the construction projects to Pat's March video.

6PM Mobility & Transportation Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

The Board will adjourn to a Study Session after Public Comment.

Personal Transportation Vehicle (PTV) Policy
The School of Mines is working on a policy for PTVs on campus. MTAB is working on the corresponding policy for all rights of way in the City. PTVs include motorized modes of transportation such as motorized scooters, skateboards and bicycles

MTAB began this discussion last month. How do you keep all people safe on all rights of way? Bikes on pedestrian paths are alarming to pedestrians--both parties find the share annoying. But if you say all bikes are banned from all pedestrian paths, such as sidewalks, does that mean a 4-year learning to ride a bike must ride in a bike lane on the street? If you say bikes or scooters are limited to 6 MPH, do the riders have any way of knowing what speed they're going? If we require users of PTVs to obey traffic laws, but they're kids, who have never had driver's ed, how would they know what the traffic laws are? If you just say, "don't behave recklessly," who defines what is "reckless?"

These are the kind of issues MTAB is trying to work through. They are considering renting a bunch of e-bikes and riding around town together so they can try a part of the PTV experience. They may do public outreach at the Golden Bike Cruise, the Farmers Market, and at Beverly Heights Park (at the base of the Lariat Loop Road).

Many entities are working on this conundrum--Jeffco Open Space, Jeffco Schools, other cities, etc.

Guardrail Design
Finally, they will discuss design of guardrails as part of the bike manual they are developing.

Golden History: How to Use a Mountain (STM)

South Table Mountain – Google Satellite image

In 1975 attorney Leo Bradley was hoping to open a quarry on South Table Mountain. The April 24, 1975 Golden Transcript described a well-attended meeting of the Jefferson County Planning Commission, which was reviewing Mr. Bradley’s application.

Bradley is representing the Adolph Coors Company and two other landowners who applied for the rezoning of 940 acres to the county’s new zone classification that preserves commercial mineral deposits…. While there are no plans to mine the Coors property, Bradley has stated that if the mineral conservation zoning is granted he would immediately seek a permit to mine the property owned by his wife, Patricia Bradley, and her sister, Maryanna Johnson.

When asked what he planned to do with the property after the rock was excavated, Bradley replied that there were no plans. One of the Planning Commissioners said she believed he had told a group in Pleasant View that the land would become a reservoir. “Your impression was dead wrong,” Bradley replied.

A geologist testified that if the volcanic caprock was removed from the mountain top, rain and snow would seep into the lower parts of the mountain and would drain out of the west face, increasing the possibility of landslides.

A petroleum geologist submitted a report noting that 38 landslide deposits had been mapped on North and South Table Mountains by the USGS, indicating “the extreme instability and present delicate equilibrium of the mountain slopes.”

Several citizen groups voiced their objections to the quarry and asked that the applicants submit “a complete environmental impact statement with more specific information concerning dust pollution, noise, truck traffic, drainage, and after-use.”

Post Script: Attorney Bradley never gave up his efforts to quarry South Table Mountain. He died in 2004. His wife, Patricia, died in 2021. Their children recently presented a plan to install solar panels on the family’s South Table Mountain property. The county rejected the application.

Most of the top of the mesa is now Jefferson County Open Space.
