1-3PM Modern Kintsugi @ Foothills Art Center - Creative Campus
Kintsugi is a 400 year old Japanese art form of the mending of ceramics — creating beauty from brokenness. Kintsugi’s philosophy reflects Japanese culture and teaches us the importance of cherishing and caring for things in our mass consumption society, and the beauty of brokenness/imperfection in things and ourselves.
In this workshop we will guide a small group through a modern method of this ancient craft. You will see and feel the beauty you have created from the brokenness and reflect on your own life’s journey. All welcome and all materials needed for the experience will be provided.

4-5:30PM Collage - Art in Pieces @ Foothills Art Center - Creative Campus

This 6-week hands-on art workshop invites young artists to explore the exciting world of collage — transforming everyday materials into imaginative works of art. Participants will learn to express their ideas and personal identity using basic collage techniques. These techniques include ripping or tearing the paper, cutting into shapes or strips, adding their own drawing, writing or doodling and by creating texture with special papers or layering.
Through weekly guided sessions, students will experiment with the various techniques and work with color and composition. The students will contribute to a community project and create individual pieces of art weekly. Register

Reminder to Weigh In on a Bike-Sharing Plan

The City is asking you to participate in a survey regarding a proposed bike share system. RESPONSES ARE DUE BY FRIDAY, APRIL 3rd.
The request to participate appeared on the City's Facebook page and a number of people provided comments on Facebook. Facebook comments do not count! If you want to weigh in on this issue, you must complete the survey.
You may find the survey difficult to complete, for several reasons. It requires that you provide your age group, ethnicity, and income level. The survey also requires you to choose at least one location for a bike dock--even if you don't want one anywhere.
Bike Share History
Some of the comments on Facebook asked, "didn't we try this before?"

We did a couple of similar things. In 2016, the City got a generous grant for a pilot program to establish a "Bike Library." The grant allowed them to buy a good-sized shed and a bunch of bikes and helmets. People could borrow the bikes for free, for 2 hours, and rent them by the day or hour for longer rides. That program ran, off and on, until 2021. That summer, the City announced that they had been unable to find anyone to run the Bike Library. (I always wonder whether that shed is still full of bikes and helmets.)
In 2018, the City participated in another pilot. This time, a commercial company placed racks full of bikes that people could rent using an app. That program, originally planned to run for a year, lasted only two months. The commercial company decided to end it and removed the bikes. The Golden Transcript published a good article describing that short-lived program.

Easter Egg Hunt in Parfet Park - Photo by Dave Powers

There'll be great fun this Saturday, April 4, for all Golden kids from the ages of 2 to 12! It's Golden's first annual Easter egg hunt, and it's being sponsored by the merchants committee of the Golden Chamber of Commerce. The hunt will be full of surprises, and there'll be over a hundred "numbered" eggs good for prizes in downtown stores.
Colorado Transcript - April 2, 1953
The article goes on to explain where kids of various age groups should line up, based on age: 2–4-year-olds by the tennis courts, south side of the mill ditch; 5–6-year-olds remainder of the park, south side of the mill ditch; 7-12-year-olds north of the mill ditch.

The mill ditch was a man-made stream that bisected Parfet Park. It was dug in the 1860s to provide water power to the Golden Mill. The ditch was an attractive hazard for a park, and more than one child drowned there over the years. Later that same year (1953), the City purchased the water rights from the Golden Mill and filled in the ditch.

The 2026 Edition of the Golden Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Golden Kiwanis Club, takes place this Saturday, April 4th. It starts at 10AM and it's over very quickly, so don't be late!

Transcript ads for Douglas Shoes - 1868 (left) and 1903 (right)

The April 2, 1903 Colorado Transcript included an advertisement for W.L. Douglas Shoes.
W.L. Douglas spent his early years as a cobbler in Golden. His shop was located on 12th Street, about where the post office stands today. According to a November 17, 1904 Transcript article, Douglas sold his Golden business in 1868 or 1869 and left Golden with $470. From here, he went to Massachusetts and started a shoe factory. The business did well and Douglas became a wealthy man. He served in the Massachusetts state legislature and eventually as Governor of the State of Massachusetts. He was also known for his philanthropic works. He died in 1924.
The Transcript liked to point out that much of Douglas’s success came from advertising in newspapers. Douglas advertised in papers all over the county, including the Colorado Transcript, but the Transcript had the honor of printing Douglas’s very first advertisement, in the June 5, 1867 edition. The Plains Indian War was heating up at that time, and he suggested that a pair of his shoes would help you run away from hostiles.
