Golden Senior Santa

The Golden Senior Santa program provides holiday gifts to local seniors experiencing health or financial challenges.

The program coordinates with a local senior apartment building and Seniors Resource Center to identify seniors who don’t have family nearby and would welcome some holiday cheer.

Gifts are collected through a combination of companies who make it an employee program and retail businesses who promote it to their customers.

Gift tags can be picked up at Windy Saddle Café or Launch Espresso or you can shop on the Amazon Wish List at bit.ly/seniorsantagolden.

The Economic Development Commission will consider a request to sponsor Golden Startup Network meetings for another year. The $3000 sponsorship will cover the cost of tea and coffee for twelve monthly meetings. The Startup organization, Traxion, is also requesting $4500 to cover "a platform of resources, mentorship, and community support around entrepreneurs."

EDComm will also be tasked with administering a grant program. The Downtown Development Authority has provided grants for downtown businesses for many years. GURA recently decided to offer grants to businesses in the urban redevelopment districts. Beginning next year, EDComm will offer grants to small businesses in areas not covered by DDA or GURA. The first year budget for these grants will be $20,000. Staff proposes covering the following expenses:

Golden History: Loveland Gardens

East side of the 1100 block of Washington Avenue

There is an empty spot between two buildings in the 1100 block of Washington Avenue. This used to be a gravel and litter-strewn patch, but in 2006, the Golden Urban Renewal Authority, which was still working downtown at that time, arranged to lease it from the property owner. GURA provided some funding, and several community groups provided labor to clean up the lot, lay paving stones, and plant trees and flowers.

Loveland’s store – Golden History Museum

The new pocket park was named Loveland Gardens. They chose that name because in 1859, William Loveland built his first store in that location.

Loveland was one of Golden’s earliest settlers. He and George West’s Boston Company engaged in a friendly competition to see which would complete the first store building in Golden (Loveland won, but he cheated a bit).

Loveland’s later store building served as the meeting place for the territorial legislature–thus the name of its current occupant, the Old Capitol Grill

Loveland was a tireless Golden promoter. He campaigned to make Golden the capital and brought the legislature here for several sessions during our Territorial era. He also laid early claim to Clear Creek canyon, obtaining permission to build first a wagon road and later a railroad through the canyon (the Colorado Central Railroad).

He became a towering figure, not just in Golden, but at a state level. The city of Loveland and Loveland Pass are both named after William Loveland.
