Win a Garden in a Box

Every year, the City sponsors a Garden-in-a-Box program to encourage residents to plant low moisture gardens. I've bought many of them over the years, and the plants really do thrive in our climate.
The gardens aren't yet available for purchase, but the Garden In A Box people are currently running a gift card giveaway. Enter by February 10th to be eligible to win.
While winter may not be done with us just yet (a good thing for snowpack and drought relief), we gardeners can’t help but dream of spring! 🌱 If you’re itching to get your hands dirty, we’ve got just the thing.
Garden In A Box is giving away $200 gift cards to two lucky winners to help you plant a beautiful, waterwise landscape this spring. With ordering opening in March, it’s the perfect time to start sowing the seeds for your garden goals! Enter by February 10 for your chance to win!

At this time of year, most of the Boards & Commission are discussing the Work Plans that they will present to City Council. Since the Public Art Commission is being phased out, to be replaced by an Arts and Culture Commission, they will not prepare a Work Plan for 2025.

They commissioned several pieces of art during 2024, and staff will review the status each project.
- New Loveland Mine Park ($53K)
- Clear Creek Trail ($25K)
- DeLong Park ($75K) *
- Triangle Park (Yucca Seed Pods in Limestone - budget unspecified)
- Ulysses Park ($92K)
*A long-time resident of the East Street neighborhood has offered to contribute $25K toward the cost of the DeLong Park artwork, in memory of her late husband. The Commission will decide whether to accept the contribution, and if so, will provide an acknowledgment of the gift. The meeting memo does not mention whether there will some acknowledgement on the art installation itself.
This morning, they will provide their thoughts on the artwork to be commissioned for the new city hall. The City plans to dedicate 1% of the construction budget to public art. At this time, they estimate that the art budget will be about $470K. Staff is asking whether the art should be concentrated in and near the new building or if it should be spread into Vanover Park or even as far as Washington Avenue.

5PM Teen Night @ Golden Community Center

Golden Teen Nights is a program designed and operated by a group of Golden High School students with Golden Rotarians serving as helpers/advisors. Teen Nights is designed to give students an opportunity to interact with their peers in a setting outside of school. It is held the first Thursday of each month (excluding June and July), 5:00 to 7:30 pm at the Golden Community Center. Attractions include board games, swimming, pool, soft drinks, pizza, snacks, and just hanging out. Other organizations are often invited to attend and make presentations to the teens. The program is funded by a Thriving Community grant from the City of Golden.

Golden History: The Ghost of a Staircase

Google Street Images - June 2017

The building at 11th and Washington served as the town mortuary for more than 100 years. The present owners did a wonderful job of restoring the building to its original Victorian glory.

One of their many major tasks was removing the decades' worth of paint on the exterior walls. Once they had removed the paint, the ghost of an old staircase appeared.

The corner building was constructed in 1872 by grocer C. A. Clark.
Mr. C. A. Clark is moving his stock of groceries into his new and elegant store on the corner of Washington Avenue and First Street, which has just been completed, and will hereafter be found there, ready, as heretofore, to serve his customers….He has now erected one of the handsomest buildings in town, the store being 25 by 80 feet, with a splendid iron front, and the second story finished off for offices.
Colorado Transcript – November 27, 1872
The following year, Clark sold his business and the building to Elmus Smith.
