9-10:30AM Community Marketing Stakeholder Committee @ City Hall

The Community Marketing Stakeholder Committee will review the Olde Golden Holidays events (Candlelight Walk, Holiday Parade, and Jingle on the Avenue).

They will discuss Goldens in Golden, which is coming up on February 8th. They will have three group photos under the arch and dog-centric vendors "adjacent to" Parfet Park.

They will also discuss applying for a grant from the Colorado Tourism Office. There are several categories of projects that would be eligible for a grant. One possibility they will discuss is adding digital screens or kiosks to the Visitors Center. This grant requires a local contribution, but the state will match every $1 of local funds with $4 of State Tourism money.

They will review the Marketing Plan for 2025, which promotes Golden as "The Perfect Day." The goal is to make Golden the "#1 preferred day trip destination for people who live in our geographic target areas." (See p. 8 of the meeting packet.)

The target areas include

  • Denver metro area (including Golden)
  • Front Range from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs
  • Out-of-state visitors.

The target demographics are:

  • Millenials (29-44 years old)
  • Families with children (25-54 years old)
  • Empty nesters (50 up to retirement)

The budget for 2025 is $524,423, plus anything left from the 2024 budget. Most of this goes to consultants, paid advertising, and the company that maintains the VisitGolden.com website. (See p. 15 of the meeting packet.)

See p. 6 of the meeting packet to learn more about the grants program.

They will review their work plan for 2025. They plan to begin hosting industry events and creating marketing materials about Golden's economy.

Golden History: Double Duty for the Opera House Roof

The January 9, 1936 Colorado Transcript announced that the Colorado National Guard planned to label towns so that aviators could identify them from the air. The display was also supposed to include an arrow, pointing to the nearest landing field. Mayor Jones speculated that the word “GOLDEN” would be painted on the roof of the Armory, the Opera House, or on one of the buildings on the Mines campus. Evidently the Opera House was chosen.

The Transcript‘s “Avenue Flashes” October 15, 1936 column stated that “Historic old opera house in Golden now does duty as a guide to flyers—on the roof is painted in large letters the word G O L D E N with a directing arrow.” The arrow isn’t visible in the photo above, so perhaps it appeared on the west slope of the roof.
