6PM Mobility & Transportation Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

The group will adjourn to a Study Session after Public Comment.

The MTAB Board will discuss safety concerns on Highway 93. This was rescheduled from the May meeting. At that time, they mentioned a recent fatality on 93. Golden has residential neighborhoods with egress directly onto 93, and it's not uncommon for bicyclists and pedestrians to need to cross the Highway. This was a long-time concern for the Beverly Heights neighborhood, which has been made considerably less hazardous by lowering the highway and putting a maze-like "lid" over it for local traffic. There are several other spots that would benefit from similar safety improvements, but Golden does not control Highway 93—the State does. MTAB will discuss what they would like to do and how they might persuade the State to do it.

The Board plans to take a bike tour—possibly using e-bikes—to explore several spots that might need traffic improvements. They will discuss doing that tour in place of their July meeting.

Staff will provide updates on several current projects, including Arapahoe Street downtown, Highway 93, and West Colfax.

6:30-8PM Waterwise Yard Seminar - Sustainable High Altitude Gardening with Colorado Native Plants (Virtual)

Gardening in the high country means your garden is a lot closer to the wildlands. Gardening with native plants is essential for successful high elevation gardening, but sometimes native plants are hard to find in the nurseries. In this webinar, we will explore how a seasonal approach to native plant gardening can start a native plant revolution in your community. Great for all levels of gardeners.

Wrong Address for Tonight's Immigration Seminar

Jefferson Unitarian Church - Photo by Barrett Studio

Apologies for this second email. I provided the wrong address for tonight's seminar on immigration—it will be held at the Unitarian Church, not the Methodist Church.

The seminar will include:

  • A short history of federal and state immigration policy and a description of the newly passed Colorado Senate Bill 276.
  • A summary of categories of immigrants in our country, the process of becoming a citizen, common myths about immigrants, and constitutional rights. Hear stories about how policies impact our immigrant community.
  • Information on ways to get involved and have an impact.

Golden History: A Pioneer Hardware Man

Portrait of William Sarell from the Golden History Museum collection

Yesterday was an anniversary of great importance to W. M. Sarell, pioneer Golden merchant. For just 66 years ago yesterday, Mr. Sarell first arrived in Golden. It has been his home ever since that time.
Colorado Transcript - June 26, 1930

William Sarell came to Golden at age 16. His father had arrived earlier and then arranged to have his son and wife accompanied across the plains.

December 26, 1866 Colorado Transcript Ad

William ran a hardware store for more than 60 years--first in partnership with his father (W. M. B. Sarell), and later with his son Raymond. He worked until he was 91, and for many years enjoyed his status as the elder statesman of Washington Avenue. In his later years, he often gave interviews to the Transcript, recalling interesting facts from pioneer times.

In this (6/26/30) article, he mentioned that it had taken 30 days to travel from Grinell, Iowa to Golden in a covered wagon. When they arrived in Golden, they had to take a ferry across Clear Creek at Ford Street, as the bridge had not yet been built.

The ferry was operated by Crippen and Harrison, who charged $5 for bringing our wagon and team across the then big stream.
Colorado Transcript - June 26, 1930

In other articles, he described watching Calvary Church be built (1867-1968) and working as a page for the Territorial Legislature, which met in Golden from 1862-1867.

William Sarell died in 1944, at age 93. His son and business partner died two weeks later, which ended a nearly 80-year run for the family firm. All three generations of Sarell Hardware owners are buried in the Golden cemetery.

In 1945, Joe and Ruby Meyer (Meyer Hardware) came to town and bought the store, which remained in the Meyer family until 2021.
