Celebrating the Astor House

Groundbreaking at the Astor House - May 27, 2022

I took this photo 3 years ago this week, when Foothills Art Center broke ground for their addition to the Astor House. What a difference three years make!

Golden Beer Talks celebrated the latest incarnation of the Astor House last week. We heard from a pair of archaeologists, who related the history of the building and described the archaeological dig they conducted in the yard. Marcie Miller told us about the Herculean efforts by Golden Landmarks Association, which prevented the building being razed for parking in the early 1970s.

Maura Adamson, Foothills' Executive Director, described the happy present and brilliant future for Foothills Art Center at the Astor House.

Golden City Brewery, a long-time supporter of Foothills Art Center (and Golden Beer Talks) was kind enough to donate the beer for the event. My daughter Margaret and her Clydesdales were in town that day for a Horses & History wagon ride, so she picked up the beer at the brewery and delivered it to the Astor House.

6-7:30PM Sustainable Golden @ Harmony Village Common House

Here's another new organization. Sustainable Golden is being formed to push the City to move more aggressively on sustainability goals. An invitation to their inaugural meeting follows:

As you may know, the City of Golden created a Citizen’s Sustainability Advisory Board in 2007. Since its creation, much has been accomplished, but much more remains to be done. The founders of SG recognize that we must act aggressively if the City is to achieve its crucial sustainability goals.

SG aims to harness the energy and expertise of its citizens to hasten our progress in three specific ways:

  • Research & Analysis - The City has limited capacity (a single staff member and a volunteer board comprised of seven private citizens, most of whom have other full time jobs) to do the serious analysis associated with designing effective policy solutions.
  • Education & Outreach - While the vast majority of Golden’s residents and businesses would like to do the right thing to make their homes more energy and water efficient, and to reduce the stream of waste that goes to the landfill, they often lack the information that would enable them to do so.
  • Advocacy - We’ve heard repeatedly from members of the City Council that, while they are supportive, that they can move farther and faster if citizens speak loudly, articulately, and with a common voice to urge more aggressive actions in support of our common goals.

Harmony Village has very limited visitor parking. We kindly ask that you park along Illinois Street and walk approximately 100 yards to the Common House. Thank you for your understanding!

Golden History: Gardening Inspiration and Two Cautionary Tales

Colorado Transcript – May 28, 1908

117 and 111 Years Ago
The weather is warming, and outdoor season is upon us, so we look to the old Transcripts for gardening inspiration from 1908, and two cautionary tales from 1914.

Colorado Transcript – May 28, 1914

A two year old child was playing in the yard while his mother was hanging clothes on a line nearby. He was bitten just below the knee by one of the largest rattlesnakes “…ever seen in this vicinity. It measured 40 inches and had twelve rattles.” The mother killed the snake and called the neighbors for help. They applied a tourniquet to the leg and tried to suck out the poison. Dr. Kelly was called, but could do nothing. The child died the same evening.

Colorado Transcript – May 28, 1914

A ten year old boy was taking cattle to pasture when he fell from a horse. “The saddled turned and the boy plunged to the ground, striking on his head.” Dr. Kelly was called and expressed the opinion that death had probably been instantaneous.

Enjoy the lovely weather but be careful out there!

Mines professor co-leading research project to investigate freshened water under the ocean floor

Colorado School of Mines Newsroom

In the 1960s, scientists were quite surprised when they looked at their data: it clearly showed that there was fresh or freshened water under the ocean floor. How did it get there? How long has it been there? Scientists have been trying to find answers to these questions since their intriguing discovery.

This month, an international team of scientists embarked on an expedition to take a closer look at, and take samples, of this freshened water stored beneath the ocean floor... Read more...
