6PM Mobility and Transportation Advisory Board (MTAB) @ Public Works Building

Tonight, the group will discuss Transportation Demand Management (TDM).

Developers who submit TDM plans may be allowed to build with fewer parking spaces. Clayworks has been approved to do this. A TDM plan might include offering bike racks, free bus tickets, information about public transit, etc. The last time this topic came before City Council, the meeting memo suggested that the City could stop providing free parking to employees of downtown businesses. The downtown merchants innundated Council with emails objecting to this idea. Tonight's memo doesn't include that suggestion, but it does mention reducing the 2 hour free parking and/or increasing parking fees.

The meeting packets includes survey results from people who were asked how they get to downtown Golden. Some said they usually walk or bike. Those who didn't walk, bike, or take public transportation were asked why not. They responded that public transit was too slow, not close to my house, doesn't feel safe, the service stops too early. Would-be bikers said there were not enough bike racks, bike lanes don't feel safe, sidewalks don't feel safe, I'm transporting children, I'm transporting groceries, I'm too old, I'm disabled, this town is too hilly, etc. The responses were interesting and appear on pp. 9-47 of the meeting packet.

6PM Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall

After the agenda and minutes are approved, the board will listen to public comment. Any speakers will have three minutes.

They will discuss organic parks, fire mitigation, "East Zone" (Vanover and Parfet Parks) amenities, community center and recreation fees.

Proposed fee increases for next year:

  • Daily Admissions: Increase of $.50 across all age categories (e.g., Adult $8 vs. $8.50 in 2025).

Golden History: Misnomer

Drawing of Golden created by the Hayden survey in 1869

The November 20, 1913 Colorado Transcript took umbrage at a recent Denver Post article.

In last Sunday's Denver Post there was published a long list of towns, cities, mountains and streams of Colorado, telling how each derived its name. The data purported to come from the U. S. geological survey. It is presumed that in most cases the information was correct, but the writer got pretty far off as to how Golden was named.

The Post claimed that the town of Golden was named after Golden Gate Canyon. In fact, it was named after Thomas Golden, one of our earliest settlers. The canyon was then named after the town.

In the fall of 1858 Tom Golden, George Jackson and James Saunders arrived at the spot on which Golden is now located, and made camp here. They did considerable prospecting here and in December left for the mountains, where Jackson was successful in finding gold. Meantime placer mines were opened at Arapahoe bar, just below Golden, and some seventy cabins were built there but four or five years later the last vestige settlement had disappeared. The town of Golden city was established in 1859, but Jackson or Golden, notwithstanding the fact that the town took the latter's name, had any further part in its creation except to aid in staking out the townsite.

Our town founders may not have had a long-term relationship with Tom Golden, but they recognized a good name when they heard one.
