Fatal Injury to a Golden Police Officer

Highway 58 near Washington Avenue - November 6, 2024 - Photo submitted by a GoldenToday reader

A Golden police officer was killed and another was injured just before 5PM last night, while working at the site of a traffic accident.

The City's announcement follows:

The City of Golden is heartbroken to announce the passing of a patrol officer who was tragically killed in the line of duty on November 6, 2024. The fallen officer’s name is not being released to the public per his family’s wishes.

Three officers responded to a motor vehicle accident call on Highway 58 near Washington Avenue. Two of those officers were struck on the roadside and pinned under a vehicle. One officer succumbed to his injuries, and the second officer is in serious condition at a local hospital.

The fallen officer was a dedicated and loved member of the Golden Police Department and was committed to protecting the safety and well-being of Golden’s residents after serving in the armed forces. He served the Golden community and his country with honor and upheld the pillars of the City’s police department’s values and goals. His loss is a profound tragedy for his family, fellow officers, and the entire Golden community.

As the City of Golden and the Golden Police Department mourn this heartbreaking loss, we ask that our community keep the officer’s family in their thoughts during this difficult time. Details regarding funeral arrangements and any commemorative services will be shared as they become available.

9AM Public Art Commission Meeting @ City Hall

Staff will update the group on Council's plans to replace the Public Art Commission with an Arts and Culture Commission. Some residents have expressed concerned about Council's plans to include non-Golden residents on the new board (since they will be empowered to spend Golden taxpayer money). This is briefly mentioned on p. 2 of the meeting packet.

PAC will review a Request for Proposals regarding artwork for Ulysses Park. The memo on this topic begins on p. 12 of the meeting packet. They have budgeted $92,000 for this project.

They will discuss proposals for maintaining the public art collection. The proposals cover the next four years, and will total approximately $23,000. Information begins on p. 16 of the meeting packet.

Hal Shelton mural - Photo by Dave Powers - enlarge

The Hal Shelton mural that hangs on the second floor of the community center belongs to the Golden Civic Foundation and is on long-term loan to the City. The mural needs some restoration work (~$4500) and they may choose to change the front covering to non-glare plexiglass (~$10,000). This information begins on p. 20 of the meeting packet.

Planned artwork for New Loveland Mine Park - enlarge

PAC chose a giant shovel and pickaxe as the public art installation for New Loveland Mine Park (map - budget $53K). The neighbors have objected to the choice. The two groups met at the park to discuss placement of the installation and concluded that the pieces should be placed for maximum visibility from the trail but minimum visibility from the neighbors' houses.

Samples of similar pieces to those proposed for the Clear Creek Trail and DeLong Park

The contract for Clear Creek Trail artwork (map - budget: $20K) is currently being reviewed. PAC and Parks Dept staff met at DeLong Park (map - budget: $75K) to discuss placement of that artwork. They decided to purchase a stylized "tree" and a bench by the same artist. See p. 4 of the meeting packet for more information.

A meeting was scheduled yesterday at the "Triangle" (the piece of city-owned land south of Domino's Pizza) to discuss the placement of proposed artwork at that spot (map - budget: $75K).

They are commissioning an artistic bike corral "for the entrance" (not sure where that is or the budget for this project). See item D of p. 4 of the meeting packet. Proposals are due next week.

For more information on any of these topics, see the meeting packet.

6-7:30PM Colorado in the Civil War @ The Golden History Museum

Captain George West (founder of the Colorado Transcript) and his brother-in-law, Lt. Joseph Boyd - 2nd Colorado Cavalry - Golden History Museum Collection

During this illustrated program, John Steinle, author of Colorado and the Civil War, will illuminate the role Golden played in the Civil War. Civil War artifacts from the museum’s collection and from a private collection will be displayed during the program.

TicketsTens of thousands crossed the Great Plains in 1859 seeking their fortunes during the great Colorado Gold Rush. Cities such as Denver, Boulder, Golden, Central City and Breckinridge sprang up overnight as the search for gold led deep into the Rocky Mountains. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Colorado’s territorial government was firmly in Union hands, and multiple Colorado units were formed within the Union Army. Fighting in the largest battles of the Civil War west of the Mississippi, Coloradans helped save the West for the Union. As the capital of Colorado Territory during the Civil War, as a recruiting center for Union troops, and as the home of leading officers in Colorado’s Civil War effort, Golden played a vital role in the struggle to defeat the Confederacy and destroy slavery.

During this illustrated program, John Steinle, author of Colorado and the Civil War, will illuminate the role Golden played in the Civil War. Civil War artifacts from the museum’s collection and from a private collection will be displayed during the program.

About the Presenter

John Steinle, a native of Hamilton, Ohio, served as Director at several Ohio museums before moving to Colorado in 1992. In 1994, Steinle became the Administrator of Hiwan Homestead Museum in Evergreen, Colorado, working for Jefferson County Open Space. He was later promoted to History Education Supervisor and Region Supervisor for the Bear Creek Region. He retired in 2016.

Golden History: How to Deal with Slackers

The United States entered World War I in 1917. At first, President Wilson hoped to conduct the war with an entirely volunteer force. It soon became clear that they would not get enough volunteers, so Congress instituted a draft. Apparently, many men failed to register with the Selective Service.

Colorado Transcript – November 7, 1918

The November 7, 1918 Colorado Transcript announced City Council’s latest ordinance. At the request of the War Department, effective immediately, the City of Golden required

all able-bodied men between the ages of 16 and 61 to engage regularly and habitually in some useful and recognized business, trade, or occupation for at least five days of each calendar week and an average of at least six hours per day…. This legislation by the city council is purely a war measure, and while it may seem drastic, similar orders have been passed by almost every municipality in the country.

Colorado Transcript – November 14, 1918

Fortunately for the slackers and the leisure class, the war ended just a few days later, on November 11th. The draft was canceled at that time.

Thanks to the Golden History Museum for providing the online cache of historic Transcripts, and to the Golden Transcript for documenting our history since 1866!
