City Council Candidate Forums

There were two City Council Candidate Forums (Fora?) this year, and the City was kind enough to record them both. To hear what your candidates said on the following topics, click on the forum link and use the slider to move to the spot where they discussed that particular topic.
9/30/25 - League of Women Voters Questions
Opening Remarks
3 min 10 sec - 17 min 20 sec
Question #1- Infrastructure and Fiscal Responsibility
17 min 20 sec - 29 min 35 sec
What do you see as Golden’s most pressing infrastructure or capital improvement priorities? How would you address these needs while ensuring the City maintains long-term financial stability and protects its monetary reserves?
Question #2 - Addressing Homelessness
17 min 20 sec - 29 min 35 sec
In your view, what are the primary factors contributing to homelessness in Golden? What specific strategies or actions would you champion to reduce or prevent homelessness and to support unhoused people in our community?
Question #3 - Trust, Representation, and Transparency
17 min 20 sec - 29 min 35 sect
If elected, how would you build trust and ensure transparent governance? What specific actions will you take to ensure that a broad and diverse range of Golden residents feel genuinely heard and represented?
Question #4 - Community Vitality
52 min 20 sec - 1 hr 4 min 55 sec
Golden’s high housing costs present a growing challenge to community vitality, making it difficult for local employers to attract and retain workers. To sustain a healthy local economy and ensure those who work in Golden can afford to live here, what specific policies or partnerships would you support to expand housing opportunities across a wide range of income levels?
Question #5 - Governance and Management
1 hr 4 min 55 sec - 1 hr 4 min 55 sec
Are there aspects of how the City of Golden is currently governed or managed that you think could be improved or changed? If so, what specific changes would you advocate for, and how would you work collaboratively to implement them? If not, what do you think is working particularly well, and how would you help sustain or build on those strengths?
Closing Remarks
1 hr 16 min 36 sec - 1 hr 28 min 43 sec
10/7/25 - Leadership Golden Questions
Opening Remarks
3 min 50 sec - 19 min 20 sec
Question #1 - Parking
19 min 20 sec - 33 min 45 sec
The neighborhoods near downtown now have permit-only parking. The Jackson Street Streetscape will eliminate 51 parking spaces. The new Ford and Jackson Streets bike lanes will eliminate 121 parking spots. Should Golden continue reducing available parking spots? Where should people park when they visit downtown?
Question #2 - Historic Preservation
33 min 45 sec - 46 min 33 sec
Golden prides itself on its historic look and feel, but we are demolishing historic homes to make way for taller, denser multi-family housing projects. How can we balance our desire for historic preservation against the desire to increase our housing supply?
Question #3 - Communication and Civic Engagement
46 min 33 sec - 59 min 55 sec
Golden uses a variety of methods to solicit public input on plans and projects. Despite these efforts, citizens often seem blindsided by city projects. What would you do to improve communication and civic engagement?
Question #4 - What Else?
59 min 55 sec - 1 hr 13 min 15 sec
What other concerns are you hearing in your ward? If you are elected to Council, how will you address them?
Closing Remarks
1 hr 13 min 15 sec

Golden History: Cemetery Tours this Saturday

Enjoy Golden history and spectacular fall foliage this Saturday!

In 2020 (because of the pandemic), the City had to cancel their annual tours of the Golden Cemetery. As a consolation gift to my subscribers, I wrote a self-guided cemetery tour: "Millers and Scribblers - Golden's Mill Owners and the Transcript family."
The next year, the volunteer who had been giving the City's tours had a health emergency, so the history museum asked me to fill in. I've been doing them ever since! Each year, I've covered a distinct subset of our Golden forebears:
2021 - Wild to Wondrous: Those who shaped today's Golden cemetery
2022 - Farmers and Ranchers
2023 - Mavens and Merchants: Prominent business owners
2024 - Fabulous Females of Golden
I will be giving tours again this Saturday, and as always, this is a fund-raiser for the Golden History Museum. I hope you'll join us! Tickets are available here. The tours will be at 11AM and 1PM.
Golden History: The Smokestack

Several postcards of Coors, all with smokestacks (and therefore all photos taken between 1925 and 1970)

The July 13, 1970 Golden Transcript reported that the Coors smokestack was being demolished. The 180 foot tall smokestack was built in 1925. The article explains that the stack had been used with a coal boiler. The Clean Air Act became law in 1967, and Coors had switched to gas and oil boilers, to clean up their emissions.

From the article:
All of this is part of Coors recognition for the need to control air pollution. Remember how the black smoke used to waft over the Table Mountains, down the valley towards Wheat Ridge or up the valley over Golden?
The presence (or absence) of the smokestack is one item that I use to help establish dates for pictures of Coors.
