Topic: Tips and Tech for Easier Living As Vision Changes
Speakers: Peter and Nancy Torpey
Brewery: Mountain Toad Brewing
Vision loss doesn’t have to mean a loss of independence. Join Dr. Peter Torpey and Dr. Nancy Goodman Torpey, hosts of the popular Eyes On Success podcast, for an engaging look at the tools that make daily life easier. From smartphone apps that read prescription labels and menus aloud, to simple ‘low-tech’ hacks for your kitchen, Pete and Nancy will show you how to navigate vision changes with confidence and success. Whether you are experiencing mild changes or significant loss, you’ll walk away with a roadmap of resources to help you keep doing what you love.
About Pete and Nancy:
Born with congenital glaucoma, Peter Torpey navigated his youth with low vision before becoming totally blind after finishing college. With a Ph.D. in Engineering Physics, Peter spent 26 years at Xerox Corporation, where he earned 20 patents and the President’s Award for his innovations in printer technology. During his tenure, he became Xerox’s youngest Research Fellow and led the team responsible for creating the image-processing algorithms and print quality specifications for their ink-jet printers.
Nancy Goodman Torpey is fully sighted but has 43 years of experience living with Peter’s blindness. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics and spent 23 years at Xerox Corporation where she earned 16 patents and the Excellence in Science and Technology Award for her work understanding the human visual system and how it relates to print quality requirements. She spent her career in corporate research with a brief stint in product development and retired as a Principal Scientist.
They live in Golden, Colorado, and combine their love for science and service as the co-hosts and co-producers of the Eyes On Success podcast. They have produced over 800 unique episodes in 15 years dedicated to helping the visually impaired community live more independent and fulfilling lives. They have two grown children and four grandsons.
An evening hosted by Golden Beer Talks centers around a brief, informative and entertaining presentation by an expert on an irresistibly enticing topic. Each event features beer for sale from one of our local breweries, along with a variety of delicious food and drink offerings from the Buffalo Rose kitchen and bar.
It's Golden's own grassroots version of TED talks for the benefit of our own local community--and just for the fun of it. Golden Beer Talks is a nonprofit venture focused on three favorite local things--Golden and Beer and Talking!

Golden History: Origins of the Golden Landmarks Association

Downtown buildings destroyed after World War II: The South School, the Courthouse, the North School, the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, and the Catholic Church
In the decades after World War II, Golden was on a “modernization” binge. Many of our Victorian-era buildings were razed and replaced at this time. Historic architecture wasn’t valued in that period, but modern conveniences such as central heating and plumbing were. The need for parking lots drove many of the demolitions. People were moving farther from downtown, and they were less likely to walk to businesses, so they needed somewhere to park.
The Astor House was slated for demolition in the early 1970s. The space it occupied would have provided 8 new parking spaces.
In response to that plan, a group of citizens founded the Golden Landmarks Association. They persuaded City Council to give them some time to prove the value of the building. Volunteers peeled wallpaper, painted, made repairs, and shored up the foundation. They organized community events in the building and persuaded Golden’s voters of the value of preserving one of our oldest buildings. In the end, Council agreed to bring it to a vote, and Golden’s citizens voted to purchase and preserve the building.

The Golden Landmarks Association ran the Astor House as a museum for about 40 years. Many old Golden families donated antiques to furnish the bedrooms, dining room, and kitchen.
Golden Landmarks was also entrusted with the Richard Ronzio and Pete Morrison photo collections as well as other valuable Golden History documentation. They helped establish Golden’s 12th Street, 8th and 9th Street, and East Street historic districts, and did significant restoration work on the brickyard house.
In recent years, they have celebrated Golden’s Living Landmarks with an annual banquet toasting people and institutions who have made contributions to Golden’s history.
