Going, Going...and Gone

Phot by Linda Cobb

You may recall noticing two houses on 7th Street, between the CoorTek property and Highway 58. According to the County Assessor's Office, they were built in 1902 and 1918.

Google Street Images - 2020

Linda Cobb got some lovely, spooky night shots of the homes in February, and has kept a casual eye on them in the intervening weeks.

The houses have now been demolished. The property will be incorporated into the Clayworks development.

5:30PM Planning Commission Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

1615 Ford Street (map)

First Case - 1615 Ford Street (map)
This property came before Planning Commission on January 15th. The developer plans to remove the garage at the back of the lot and build a duplex in its place. He then plans to sell the three units separately.

Plan showing the original house and the proposed duplexes - enlarge

In January, the developer requested a major adjustment to allow different form types to be built on the same lot. Neighbors provided public comment expressing concern about the owners' cars having to make a sharp turn into their garages in such a narrow alley. They were also concerned about where the homeowners could put their trash bins in the narrow alley.

The commissioners commented that these large buildings, filling so much of the lot, were not in accord with the spirit of the new zoning code. The objective of the new code was to encourage smaller, more affordable housing units. Instead, recent projects have all been as large as the developers can make them--and will be priced accordingly.

Planning Commission approved the major adjustment in January.

Tonight, the developer is back to request another major adjustment. This time he wants to increase the floor area of the duplexes from the 2200 sq ft that code allows to 2600 sq ft.

Second Case - ALSO 1615 Ford Street (map)
The second case concerns the same property. It asks the Commission to allow the planning director to approve Minor Adjustments to the landscaping requirements. The developer wants to reduce the landscape strip and sidewalk width .

Golden History: Watching the Water

“Aeroplane View” with the Lookout Mountain reservoir marked – enlarge

The April 2, 1925 Colorado Transcript reported that Golden’s reservoir on Lookout Mountain was filling with Beaver brook water. This was welcome news, as Golden citizens loved their Beaver brook water supply. The water quality was excellent and the water pressure was great.

Some years our Beaver brook supply failed, either because the reservoir was dry or because the pipes that ran from the brook to the reservoir froze. When that happened, we had to pump water from Clear Creek. The Creek was notoriously polluted at that time, with runoff from the mines and mills upstream, so Creek water was a very poor substitute.

The pipe line has been empty since the 17th of January. It was necessary to drain it at that time because of lack of water in Beaver brook, which condition was caused by an unprecedented dry summer, fall and winter. The pipe was not frozen.

Google Satellite image showing Golden’s former reservoir – enlarge

In 1925, the Water Commissioner had been watching the reservoir with great concern, as the level got lower and lower. He knew the reservoir wouldn’t refill until spring runoff began and the level of water in Beaver brook rose. Golden residents were urged to conserve water.

Water from Beaver brook is again flowing into the reservoir on top of Lookout mountain, and the danger of having to go back to water from the old pumping plant has been averted.

That was great news!

Avenue Flashes: Howd-E! It’s a helluva time at Mines E-Days

Golden Transcript

I grew up here in Golden, as most of you probably know. My Dad went to the Colorado School of Mines, class of 1956, and half of the kids in my neighborhood had parents that were professors or were currently students there themselves. So, it should come as no surprise that one of the very first songs I learned all the words to was this one... Read more...
