The Planning Commission will continue reviewing the draft Comprehensive Plan. Staff hopes to get final approval from the Commission at the February 24th meeting.
The review process has been difficult, as the new version is significantly different from the current Comprehensive Plan. The current Plan came out of an extensive public outreach process in 2010. Citizens were asked what they valued in Golden. They agreed upon the following:
A. An accessible and walkable community
B. Active outdoors and the environment
C. Safe, clean and quiet neighborhoods
D. Support for local business and downtown
E. Convenience and community amenities
F. Support for our history, culture and education
G. A family and kid friendly town
H. Friendliness and appreciation of our neighbors
I. Our sense of community
J. Belonging/volunteerism
Previous versions of the Plan included sections on each of those values, explaining what the City was doing to support each one.
This version of the Comprehensive Plan is different. Several of the values have been dropped (notably "Safe, clean and quiet neighborhoods" and "A family and kid friendly town").
This version of the plan provides much more emphasis on increasing density and fitting more people in the City's limited space. It states that most new development will be multi-family housing rather than single family homes. It emphasizes use of transportation demand management plans as a way to provide less parking. It focuses on the goal to add affordable housing developments.
It includes a new section on "Regional Partnerships." This is primarily focused on the School of Mines, which has shown dramatic growth over the past few years. This is always a matter of concern to the City, since they have little or no control over what and where the School decides to build. This section mentions the City's goal to have more input into future campus expansion plans.

5:30PM Contemplative Memoir @ Foothills Art Center - Astor House

Writing a memoir may be the most challenging and consequential writing we will ever do. We think we know ourselves well enough to write about our lives, but the effort seems daunting, and its value dubious. After all, how do we begin to choose which stories to tell from all the days and years? And who cares? First of all, no life is ordinary. No life is without miracles and magic, great loss and great love. And probably no life is more crucial for our children to understand then ours, because they share more than our genetics, they share our spiritual DNA. What made us who we are, helps them see who they can become. In that sense, we leave them with more than stories. We leave them with meaning and hope. More information

Golden History: Dead Man and Starving Cat Guard Liquor Factory

The February 4, 1926 Colorado Transcript reported on yet another bootleg liquor operation. In this case, Coroner Billy Woods received an anonymous phone call, alerting him to the presence of a body in a ranch house located northeast of Golden. The coroner and his assistant entered the house and found a dead man in bed, in an upstairs bedroom. They also found a cat “in the last stages of starvation” trapped in a box on the first floor.
The Coroner summoned Sheriff Walter Johnson. The Sheriff found “a good-sized still, several barrels of mash and about a gallon of whiskey.” He believed that the man had died of poison but was unsure whether it came from the still or another source. The state prohibition officer was summoned and he recognized the man as someone who had been involved in a Denver bootleg case.
The coroner estimated that the man had been dead at least ten days. The sheriff’s investigation found a witness who said that two men had been at the house five days earlier.
It is thought that perhaps his partner, going to the place for a load of whiskey, found the body, covered it with blankets, penned the cat in the box so it could not disturb the body and then fled, notifying the coroner some time later.
The article did not include the fate of the cat.

A follow-up article the following week identified the body as William Byram of Denver. Byram had been convicted of murder in 1905, spent six years in the penitentiary, and was then pardoned.
