The owners of 86 DeFrance Way (map) want to add a front porch to their house. The Planned Unit Development (PUD) governing their neighborhood requires a 20 foot setback from the right of way. The proposed front porch would reduce the setback to 16 feet. The PUD was approved in 1978, and according to our recently-changed zoning code, having houses closer to the street, ideally with front porches, is more desirable than the 1970s ideal of household privacy and distance from the street.
In Planning Staff's opinion, this change will not adversely affect the neighbors, so they recommend that Planning Commission approve the change. The meeting memo provides more information, including the 1978 PUD.
The Commission will then move into study session to consider changes to the Hill House form described in our zoning code. The meeting memo states that houses using this form must have a minimum slope of 10%. It adds that generally this applies to the homes on North and South Table Mountain.

The old artwork - Google Street Images
The Public Art Commission has ceased to exist; their function has been folded into the newly formed Arts & Culture Commission. One of the projects they were wrapping up was replacing the sadly eroded artwork on the signal box at 13th and Ford.

The new artwork has been applied to the box. Thanks to Barry Bettis for the photo!

Golden History: Golden's Great White Way

Downtown Golden, late-1930s (with fancy new streetlights!)
The July 2, 1936 Colorado Transcript found Golden planning “a little jollification” to celebrate installation of new streetlights in the downtown business district. The plan was to have Mayor Jones push the button turning on the lights while the aldermen (city councilors) stood in attendance. The manager of the electric company would give a speech. A quartet of Kiwanis would sing some songs, followed by “a charming chorus of business girls.” Then they would have a dance on the well-illuminated street.
The City had had a few streetlights prior to this time, but they were widely spaced and of low voltage. A 1910 article said that downtown had 8 streetlights, each 200 candle power (approximately equivalent to a 150 watt light bulb).
The new, 1936 lights were described as “Golden’s Great White Way” (which was a nickname at the time for the bright electric lights of the theater district in New York). The paper enthused that the new lighting
...will greatly facilitate evening window shopping, which will be a real pleasure with the marvelous new stocks of merchandise now on display by Golden merchants. Heretofore, persons who wanted to see goods being shown in many show windows at night would have had to carry a flash light or a candle.
This makes me wonder if the stores had electricity in the mid-1930s. If they did, they weren't using any of it to light their display windows at night!
