Birdseye View of Construction in Golden - March, 2025

Drone footage of several construction projects currently in Golden - watch it
My readers always enjoy Pat Klein's aerial images of Golden. With so much construction in town lately, he's been capturing some interesting video footage of Mines apartments (west of Hwy 6), the new undergrad dorm (19th & Illnois), "The Col" (17270 Colfax), Ulysses Park, Lena Gulch, Canyon View Apartments (off Golden Gate Canyon Road), and Clayworks.

6-7:30PM Time Traveling through Golden: A Geologic Journey through Deep Time! @ Golden History Museum
Join us in traveling through Deep Geologic Time across the Golden area. You will learn about landscape changes over the last 300+ million years, as continents came together and split apart several times while moving from the tropics at sea level to today’s middle latitude and mountain elevations. Each landscape hosted incredibly different and now-extinct plants and animals, leaving behind a rich fossil record, including those in Golden. Mountains rose and then eroded away several times in Colorado. The Front Range we see today is the last remnant of those ancestral mountain ranges. It has been sculpted by several glacial episodes in the geologically recent past as climate changed from warm to cool and back several times.
How do we “read” rock layers? Why are some rocks red or green? Were there really camels in the Golden area? What about dinosaurs, like at Dinosaur Ridge and Triceratops Trail, tropical forests, and the asteroid extinction event (“K-T” boundary)? What does Apex Gulch and Lamb Springs tell us about animals of the last Ice Age and human interactions? What does past climate tell us about the future?

Golden History: For a good time...

Early Form of Transportation to Lookout Mountain
Lookout Mountain has always been a popular tourist destination. Prior to construction of the Lariat Loop Road, the means of getting there were limited to feet–either human or equine. This postcard shows some early commercial transport. It’s a small wagon, with only four occupants, but even so it took four horses to pull it up Lookout Mountain.
That card was postmarked 1907. Several things happened within the next few years that brought far more people to that area. First, Denver developed a series of Mountain Parks, including one on Lookout Mountain. Second, Bill Williams built the Lariat Loop Trail. Third, automobiles exploded in popularity throughout the teens and twenties.

The Lariat Loop was named a National Scenic Byway in 2009.
