8:30AM Special Event Review Committee @ City Hall
This will be the first time this group has been available for public viewing. I believe the intention is to broadcast it live through the website and make the recording available for viewing afterwards. They were experiencing technical difficulties last night, which prevented the City Council meeting from being broadcast live, so that may affect this meeting too.
Today's topics include a grant application from the Golden Bike Cruise, a new event application for a Golden Wine Festival, and a "location request" from Foothills Art Center. They will also review the calendar of special events for 2025. See the meeting agenda.
6-8:30PM Community Sustainability Advisory Board Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers
- Meeting Agenda
- Watch the meeting streaming live starting at 6PM
- Attend the meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers - 911 10th Street - (map)
- Provide public comment during the meeting, starting at 6PM.
The Sustainability Board will review draft building codes for all new residential and commercial construction. The proposed codes will go to City Council for adoption in June.
They will also discuss the public vehicle charging stations. Since the City began charging at these stations, usage has dropped by about 1/3. Three of the ten stations were vandalized, which left them unusable for about two months. The projected cost for the charging stations (including the vandalism repairs) for twelve months is $27,810. The projected revenue for twelve months is estimated at $28,277.
The Board will review nominations for the City's annual Sustainability Awards, which will be presented at City Council on April 22nd.
See the meeting packet to learn more about any of these topics.

Golden History: Not Their Brightest Idea

The March 26, 1914 Colorado Transcript featured a story titled “Students Have Close Call When Powder Explodes.” The Lariat Loop Road was under construction at that time, and two freshmen from the School of Mines were out exploring the project on a Saturday. It was a chilly day, and when they reached an empty blacksmith shop, they lit a fire in the forge, to warm up.

Once the fire was going, they decided to heat a piece of iron to white hot, then whack it over the anvil. The white hot end of the iron bar flew off and landed on a can of black powder.
Recognizing the disaster about to happen, they plunged out the door, but hadn’t gone far when the explosion occurred. One boy had burns “along his full length.” The other “plunged headfirst into a snowbank, and the exposed part of his anatomy was blistered. The boys at his fraternity house have rigged up a shelf for him, as he will have to eat his meals standing up for a time.”
