5:30-7PM Contemplative Memoir @ Foothills Art Center - Creative Campus

Writing a memoir may be the most challenging and consequential writing we will ever do. We think we know ourselves well enough to write about our lives, but the effort seems daunting, and its value dubious. After all, how do we begin to choose which stories to tell from all the days and years? And who cares? First of all, no life is ordinary. No life is without miracles and magic, great loss and great love. And probably no life is more crucial for our children to understand then ours, because they share more than our genetics, they share our spiritual DNA. What made us who we are, helps them see who they can become. In that sense, we leave them with more than stories. We leave them with meaning and hope. More information

5:30PM Planning Commission Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

** The video equipment in City Council chambers may still be broken, which would mean that we won't be able to watch the meeting live. If that's still the case, look for the recording tomorrow.

Comprehensive Plan

Planning Commission is being asked to approve a new version of the Comprehensive Plan ("the Comp Plan"). The Comp Plan is treated by staff and council as the expressed will of the people and is used as the basis for policy decisions.

The 2011 Comp Plan was written based on an extensive public input process. It included several goals which have been largely dropped or degraded in this version, such as "Safe, clean and quiet neighborhoods."

In 2017, the Plan was changed to say that 45% of Golden's housing should be affordable to low, moderate, and median income households.

This 2026 version emphasizes increasing density and fitting more people in the City's limited space. It states that most new development will be multi-family housing rather than single family homes. It emphasizes use of transportation demand management plans as a way to provide less parking. It focuses on adding affordable housing developments.

This new Comp Plan also includes a new section on "Regional Partnerships." This is primarily focused on the School of Mines, which has shown dramatic growth over the past few years. This is always a matter of concern to the City, since they have little or no control over what and where the School decides to build. This section mentions the City's desire to have more input into future campus expansion plans.

Planning Staff has held several public meetings to take public input, but they emphasize that comments they received at those events were not necessarily representative of the public's desires. The Planning Commission is being asked to approve the plan tonight and it will go to Council for approval in April.

The March 4, 1926 Colorado Transcript reported that 27 School of Mines students had been charged with the theft of a wheelbarrow. The students were all members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity The wheelbarrow had been left at a site in Clear Creek Canyon where Golden Canal & Reservoir employees had been doing repair work on the Welch Ditch.

The superintendent for the ditch company said the company had experienced “continual thefts of tools, powder, etc. from the ditch.” Though the wheelbarrow was valued at only $10, the frustrated superintendent offered a $50 reward for information regarding its whereabouts. Thus inspired, a marshal soon located it in the Kappa Sig yard, and all 27 members of the fraternity were charged with its theft.

The fraternity offered to settle the matter out of court, but the ditch company refused. The boys entered a plea of not guilty.

When the case was brought before the district court the following week, the district attorney recommended that the case be dismissed, which the judge permitted.
