The Conservation Greenprint 2026-2030 is a plan for the next five years of Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS). It will provide a strategic framework for preserving open space, protecting natural resources, and providing healthy, nature-based experiences in Jefferson County. We are welcoming feedback in the form of five drop-in open houses throughout Jefferson County. Your voice is essential to making sure that JCOS understands your priorities.

5:30PM Planning Commission Meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers

- Meeting Agenda
- Watch the meeting streaming live starting at 6:30PM
- Attend the meeting @ City Hall Council Chambers - 911 10th Street - (map)
- Send comments on any of the following topics to planning@cityofgolden.net
- Provide in-person comment during the meeting, at 6:30PM.
The agenda says this is a Regular Meeting, but I think it might actually be a study session. The key difference is that there is no opportunity for public comment at a study session.
One of the form types described in the new zoning code is an "Uphill House."
The Uphill House type is limited to lots with a 10% slope and no alley. The intent is for a form-type to be built into a hillside, either uphill or downhill, to work with the natural topography of the site. To account for slopes, the type allows for three-stories where other house types a limited to two-stories. The type also has a smaller lot frontage requirement compared to the suburban type. The code, however, does not have a rule of measurement for slope. Further, staff has identified certain scenarios where grades may be manipulated to achieve a 10% slope while not meeting the intent of the form-type.
Staff has identified three potential modifications to the type which is included in the attachment.
- Establish a rule of measurement for slope.
- Add a requirement that one of the stories has to be partially sub-terranean.
- Add a max lot frontage to limit a tall and wide design outcome.
The Planning Commission will discuss these recommendations. Learn more.
They will also review two webpages and may make suggestions to improve their clarity and effectiveness:

In 1902, the front range (and Golden along with it) was in the throes of oil fever. Oil had been discovered the previous year in the Boulder area, and people were optimistic that more would be forthcoming. Oil speculators frantically sought investors to help fund oil exploration, and Golden residents were excited at the prospect of oil-borne prosperity.
Several wells were sunk in the Golden area, including one in Golden Gate Canyon, another on the Churches Ranch, just north of North Table Mountain, one on the Welch Ranch (approximate area of Colorado Mills Mall), one on the east side of North Table Mountain, one near the Church Brick Yards (west of 93, north of Golden Gate Canyon Road), and one two miles east of Golden on the Middle Golden Road (32nd Street).
By the end of the year, hope was fading for the Golden-area wells.
We have now waited since March to witness the apotheosis (that’s what we call it) of the Golden Basin Oil Co.; not one thimbleful of oil…has been struck.
Colorado Transcript, October 8, 1902
Oil frenzy flared a few more times after that, but by about 1905 the dreams of Golden as an oil town had faded away.
