The October 1, 1914 Colorado Transcript contains an obituary for Dr. James Kelly, "Pioneer Physician." Dr. Kelly moved to Golden in 1861.
He was a man of unostentatious nature, and in his capacity of physician he ws enabled to perform countless acts of charity which were never known expect to those who owe the life of a child or other love ones to the kindness of this pioneer physician.
In addition to his medical practice, he owned a drug store at 1115 Washington Avenue. For many years, the drug store operated the first floor and the town's newspaper, the Transcript, had offices on the second floor.

Today, Dr. Kelly may be best remembered because of the house he built at 12th and Cheyenne. That house, now the home of the Golden City Brewery family, is still known as "the Kelly Mansion."
Dr. Kelly was an active Mason, including participation in the Shriners and the Knights Templar. He was buried in the Masonic section of Golden Cemetery.
