September 8, 1949 Colorado Transcript with a 1961 map inset (map courtesy of the Jefferson County archives) - Click to enlarge

The September 8, 1949 Colorado Transcript described an ongoing controversy between the City of Golden and the State Highway department. Several years earlier, the City had installed a stop sign on 19th Street at Ford. This forced drivers on 19th Street to yield to the continuous flow on traffic on Ford.

The State thought that the traffic on Ford should stop, rather than the traffic on 19th.

Twice during the past few months the highway department has moved the sign off Nineteenth street to Ford street. In both cases city workmen have replaced the sign on Nineteenth street.

In response to this power play, the City Manager asked the state to do a traffic study on the intersection. The December 1, 1949 Transcript reported the results of the study. During an eight-hour period, 2,382 vehicles passed the intersection on Ford Street, while only 389 vehicles used 19th.

The stop sign remained on 19th Street until a 4-way stop light was installed in July of 1971.
