The Alpine Slide and the Ski Lift in 2011 - Click to enlarge

The August 1, 1979 Golden Transcript announced that the Alpine Slide in Heritage Square was set to open the following Friday.

The twisting route of the slide was outlined in lights, visible at night from miles away.

The slide, conceived in West Germany, consists of 2,350 feet of twin tracks. Riders are carried to the top of the slide by a new chairlift and then ride down the twisting course on plastic sleds.

The tracks were made of fiber-reinforced concrete, which made for a smooth, exciting ride down the mountain.
