The October 7, 1920 Colorado Transcript included the following:

In the international airplane races, held in France recently, all the American planes were equipped with spark plugs made with clay mined in Golden. These plugs were made at Belvidere, Ill., after a long series of experiments with different kind of clay. It was found that the white plastic clay, mined by the Rubey Clay company, was the best, and the company is now getting out an order of four carloads of this grade of clay for the Belvidere concern.

Golden had many active clay mines in past years. The traces of those mines are still evident throughout the area, particularly on the west side of town. Fossil Trace Golf Course was built on former clay-mining land; in fact, some of the old mining equipment remains on the fringes of the course.

Correction: yesterday's history article included incorrect election results. Mark Macha won the Ward 2 seat in 1985; not Al Bachman.
