Richard Broad’s Store, circa 1910 – Golden History Museum collection - Click to enlarge

The April 3, 1913 Colorado Transcript announced the results of the recent City Council election. Richard Broad was elected Mayor that year.

Mr. Broad owned a dry goods store at 12th and Washington from the 1890s into the 1930s. He grew up on a ranch north of Golden. It was a hardscrabble life, and Broad had little formal schooling, but he was well read–so much so that he began his career as a schoolteacher. He embarked on business in Golden and within a few years, owned one of the more prosperous stores in town.

He had a long and distinguished career in public life, serving as an alderman (now called “City Councilor”), county commissioner (1892-1908), Mayor of Golden (1903-1905 and 1913-1917), and State Senator (1932-1936). He died in 1936 and is buried in the Golden Cemetery.
