Tonight's Topics:
- Grant request from Atomic Cowboy - they wanted a grant to defray expenses of building an entryway for the doorway that opens into Miners Alley. It's not certain that such a project would be approved by the Planning department and/or the Planning Commission. The DDA will probably suggest that they resubmit their grant request after the City has indicated that they would approve the addition.
- AlphaGraphics is moving from their location on Miners Alley (where they have been since the 1970s) into the Arapahoe Street building that includes Earth Sweet Botanicals. They are requesting grant assistance for move-related expenses such as electrical upgrades and new signage.
- Humble House recently upgraded their patio at a cost of $37,136. They are now requesting $18,568 to help defray the expense. The grants subcommittee has some hesitation about this grant, because 1) the request should be made before the work is done, and 2) DDA policy calls for at least two estimates for the work.
- They will once again discuss the parking lot north of 12th Street and west of Miners Alley. Some DDA members and city staff want to convert this property from a parking lot into a "plaza." At first they proposed calling it a "Cultural Plaza" because of the presence of Foothills Art Center and Miners Alley Performing Arts Center. Foothills isn't particularly enthused about that plan. I'm not sure whether Miners Alley wants it. The board also discussed using the parking lot as a "common consumption area," where people would sit at tables and consume foods and beverages from any restaurant (or bring a picnic from home). The restaurants were not enthused about that idea.
This idea was brought to City Council twice. Council has twice rejected it because one of the most comment complaints they hear is lack of downtown parking. This project would take away about 35 parking spaces. Staff points out that there are usually available spaces in the downtown garages.
This time, the DDA plans to proceed "unless City Council raises significant objections."
