This Talk will cover the Arapaho Creation Story, as well as the tribal migration story and treaty years. The treaty years refers to the time period during which Arapaho were assigned to present-day Colorado lands and forcibly removed from present-day Oklahoma territory—a passage including the Sand Creek Massacre. Fred will discuss current conditions and future aspirations for Arapaho in both states.
Fred Mosqueda was born into Chief Little Raven’s Band of Wooxei1i’ of the Arapaho Tribe in the small community of Canton, Oklahoma. He attended public school in Canton for 12 years, and then obtained a B.S. from Southwestern Oklahoma State University College. Fred joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1973 and received an honorable discharge in 1979, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant during his military service.
He returned home in 1988 and began working for the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Currently, Fred serves as Outreach Specialist for the Arapahoe Language and Culture Program, where he instructs the ways of the Arapaho, including language, traditions and culture.
