The foundation of a fine two story brick building has been commenced on the lot adjoining the Overland, on Washington avenue, by Dr. James Kelly and ourself [George West]. The building is to be 22x60, two stories in height. The lower story will be occupied by the doctor himself as a drug store, and the upper one for the TRANSCRIPT. We have long wanted a printing office constructed just to suit us, and we propose having it now or "bust."
Colorado Transcript - September 29, 1869
The Transcript remained in the West family until 1959. The staff and presses remained in the 1869 building for nearly a century.
In 1966, the new Transcript owners built a new home, located at 1000 10th Street (map), across from City Hall. The new building was much larger and enabled them to install new printing presses. With the new equipment, they were able to offer printing services to 40-60 other newspapers.
The 100th anniversary edition of the Transcript was printed on December 19, 1966–exactly 100 years after the first edition. That was the first issue of the paper printed on the new presses.
The original Transcript building still stands, next to the Buffalo Rose, in the historic downtown.
